A Khelo India Boxing Centre was opened on Saturday at the District Sports Complex, Peace Ground, Tuibong in Churachandpur district.
Organised by the District Youth Affairs and Sports office, Churachandpur, an inaugural boxing match between two young and budding boxers of the district was held as part of the opening ceremony.
A total of 45 students from various schools with some as young at six years of age registered for the programme under Khelo India Boxing Centre. The Centre is an initiative of the central government to train and improve sports culture and also aimed at mainstreaming sports as a tool for National development. It was launched in the year 2018.
The opening ceremony was graced as Chief Guest by Lenthang, who came on behalf of the MLA of Saikot AC, Paolienlal Haokip, who said that the boxing centre was first the in the district that was an opportunity for youth to train in boxing and excel. He distributed the Khelo Indie T-Shirt to all the registered students.
The District Youth Affairs and Sport Officer N Manihar Meetei welcomed and thanked all the participants including the chief guest and the students.
Coach S Suresh Singh told the students that they need to have discipline to succeed in sports, including Boxing. It will be their road and pillar for success, he advised.
