Free self-defence classes for women, girls

Former head of department of Medicine, RIMS S Bhagyabati Devi will teach self-defence techniques and care counselling at her residence located at Singjamei Mathak Chongtham Leikai, Imphal West opposite Gold Gym.

Leima Chanu Nawa Tengbang Lup Manipur president S Bhagyabati Devi who is also former head of department of Medicine, RIMS on Thursday announced that she will be teaching self-defence classes at her residence free of cost, with the completion of five years of teaching self-defence techniques to women and girls against violence and crime under ‘Defend Yourself’ campaign.

Bhagyabati started teaching self-defence techniques to women and school, college going girls under the said campaign since March 31, 2017 after Nirvaya Rape case occurred.

In a release, Bhagyabati mentioned that she has been teaching defence techniques at different schools and colleges, including many individuals under the campaign. Besides giving self-defence classes to persons living with HIV especially women, she also had been giving care counselling including rape victims, it stated.

It mentioned that despite strict laws against rape and violence against women, crimes had been increasing rapidly. To defend oneself from such crimes, including rape, it is necessary for women and girls to become aware the knowledge of self-defence, it mentioned.

Bhagyapati will continue to teach self-defence techniques and care counselling at her residence located at Singjamei Mathak Chongtham Leikai, Imphal West opposite Gold Gym, it added.
