CWG2022: Priyanka Goswami becomes first Indian woman to win silver in 10,000m race walk

Athlete Priyanka Goswami created history on Saturday as she became the first woman from India to win a silver in the 10,000m women's race walk at the Commonwealth Games 2022 at Birmingham.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren congratulated her win and extended best wishes for all her future endeavours.

"Heartiest Congratulations to athlete Priyanka Goswami for winning her maiden major silver in the 10km Race Walk at the #CWG2022. Your grit, resilience and superlative performance have brought glory for the country. Kudos and best wishes for all your future endeavours," CM Biren tweeted.

According to reports, India's Goswami took 43:38.83s to finish second behind Jemima Montag (42:34.30) of Australia. Emily Wamusyi Ngii (43:50.86) of Kenya won bronze.

The chief minister also congratulated India's Steeplechaser Avinash Sable, who also scripted history by winning the country's first ever medal (silver) in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase at the #CWG2022.

"Avinash Sable, India's Steeplechaser, have won the country's first ever medal in the Men's 3000m Steeplechase at the #CWG2022, by clinching a silver medal. Kudos and Many Congratulations," Biren tweeted.

Earlier, Sakshi Malik also delivered gold for the country in the women's 62 kg freestyle wrestling, while Anshu Malik won silver in the women's 57 kg freestyle wrestling and Divya Kakran won bronze in the women's freestyle wrestling in the 68kg category, at the CWG 2022.

"Our athletes continue to make us proud at CWG Birmingham. Thrilled by the outstanding sporting performance of @SakshiMalik. I congratulate her for winning the prestigious Gold medal. She is a powerhouse of talent and is blessed with remarkable resilience," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

Deepak Punia won gold in 86 kg men's freestyle, while Mohit Grewal won a bronze medal in the Men's 125 kg category freestyle wrestling at the CWG 2022.

Chief Minister Biren congratulated all the winners and extended best wishes to them in a series of tweets.
