Little did man think
He would be pushed to the basics
As the virus pin him down
To the confines of his homes
Suddenly, all are at bay, alone
Status, position and reputation begin to fade
As many mop, cook and wash,
Tycoons, corporate honchos and celebrities included
Each begins to feel the same as the other
With no distinction, life has become a great leveller!
Quality time with family
Is now there in plenty
While many make the best of it
Many others lie punctured by it bit by bit
With arguments and clashes
Fists, fights and smashes
Human frailties that were always under wraps
Shielded by distance, space and different garbs
are now all out in the open
Behind closed doors, perhaps
Favouritism, aversion, love or hate
Life’s platter is filled with them pills
All served up in varied amounts
Outburst of never-felt-before emotions
A second helping not required
Each begins to feel the same as the other
With no distinction, life has become a great leveller!
Staying in quarantine, the digital world is abuzz
With news, videos, shares and forwards
A good dose of unnecessary fuss
Urging each to push their limits
Encouraging them for nothing but the best
For some, this is a boost
For others, it’s a stress
Striving to achieve what others have achieved
Fills them with anxiety, despair and disbelief
Distance can tear us apart
Distance can do wonders
As we take a step back to sit alone
In silence, we see beyond
The wall and borders, a unique life
That none could call their own
Each begins to feel the same as other
With no distinction, life has become a great leveller!
Amid life In the 17th century
James Shirley had penned “Death the Leveller”
Little did he imagine
In the 20th century, life amid Coronavirus!
