‘Absence of regular VC has made sports varsity spineless’
Deeply concerned over the apparent delay in infrastructural construction works of National Sports University (NSU), National Sports University Construction Demand Committee (NSUCDC) today demanded constitution of executive council of the university to step up its developmental works.
Despite the laying of foundation stone of the university at Koutruk on March 16, 2018 by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, there have been no significant infrastructural developments, contended NSUCDC secretary, Maibam Sunil during a media interaction held today at Manipur Press Club.
Sunil further lamented that the absence of regular vice chancellor, registrar, finance officer and other executives has made the university spineless.
“The project officer deputed by Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, who is supposed to look after the project, is not performing duties properly. We are very apprehensive whether the project officer along with Hindustan Steelworks Construction Limited responsible for the construction works has taken advantage of the absence of executives,” he stated.
The NSUCDC secretary pointed out that the construction works taken up till date is only fencing of boundaries, construction of drainages, etc. He questioned whether there is no relevant authority to see whether it is up to mark with the sanctioned amount of Rs. 100 crore.
Taking part in the press meet, NSUCDC vice president, Ahongshangbam Rupaban contended that the sports university is not properly functional because of the non-appointment of vice chancellor, registrar and finance officer.
Pertaining to such failures of the government, the university being run in a temporary campus at Khuman Lampak by opening only two courses since January 15, 2018 even though the university was proposed by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in 2014, he said.
While recounting that the advertisements were already issued for appointment of the executive officers before the parliamentary election, 2019, he demanded the government to appoint the key post at the earliest.
The NSUCDC vice president further expressed disappointment that land disputes are brewing among villagers of Koutruk and Senjam Khunou on one side and the construction workers on the other side.
Out of total 325.90 acres of land donated by villagers of Koutruk and Senjam Khunou for the university, around 4 acres of land were left out in the fencing works on the eastern side of the university complex at Senjam Khunou. The construction company subsequently is trying to encroach on the western part of the university to compensate the lost lands; he pointed out and demanded proper land demarcation once again in the presence of VCs and executive officers.
Maintaining that they are ready to extend any help and cooperation in connection with all developmental activities, he reiterated and demanded the government appointment of vice chancellor, registrar, etc. so that construction of physical infrastructure may receive suitable and sufficient attention.
It may be mentioned that minister of state, youth affairs and sports, Kiren Rijiju during his two day visit in Imphal in early September had assured that the central government will give full focus on construction and recruitment process of the university.
