Govt moots equipping forest guards with double barrel guns
Chief minister, Nongthombam Biren today launched Digital Payment Services and National Generic Document Registration System in Imphal East district at the DC Complex, Porompat.
He also inaugurated various infrastructural projects in Imphal East district including Tribal Working Women Hostel at Adimjati Society, Chingmeirong, Nature Learning Centre and Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) data centre and office complex at forest office complex, Mantripukhri, where the main function was held.
Speaking as chief guest of the function, Biren stated that there is a strong need for the present generation to work sincerely for protecting the environment. “Protecting the environment is protecting the future generation. We are now facing frequent landslides, mudslides along Imphal-Jiri, Imphal-Dimapur and Imphal-Moreh routes as consequences of our past mistakes”, he said.
He further stated that forests conservation is crucial for sustenance of life. Expressing apprehension over felling down of trees and frequent forest fires in reserve forests in the State, the chief minister mentioned that the government is considering issuing double barrel to the forest guards to chastise offenders.
Stressing further on the need to protect the environment, the chief minister sought cooperation from the public to give special focus to the initiatives of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to protect the environment by banning single-use plastic, conserving water, etc. He urged the people to use paper bags, paper cups etc. instead of using plastic products.
The chief minister went on to highlight that ‘Manipur Green Mission’ was recently launched to protect forest and ensure a green Manipur. A collective responsibility is needed for making the mission successful, he added.
While announcing that the construction of ‘Imphal View’ tower at Langol Hills would be completed soon, Biren intimated that the ropeway project to connect Thanga to Chaoba Hilla and Langol to Marjing Hill will also be completed in near future.
The chief minister also observed that the introduction of digital payment services and National Generic Document Registration System will help in bringing transparency and accountability thereby checking corruption. He was responding to a query from the media on the sidelines of the function of the digital services.
On the other hand, Biren stated that the newly inaugurated Tribal working women’s hostel was inaugurated under the ‘100 days of Modi 2.0’. The hostel has accommodation for 50 girls, a dining hall and a kitchen as well. The approaching road is not in good conditions as it is not under Non- Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR), but the State government will fix it as soon as possible, he assured.
Revenue minister, Karam Shyam, Forest and Environment minister, Th. Shyamkumar, Tribal Affairs and Hills minister, N. Kayasii, principal chief conservator of forests and Head of Forest Force, K. Angami, Imphal East DC, Dr. Rangitabali Waikhom, Imphal East SP, Jogeshchandra Haobijam were also present among others at the occasion.
