Enraged women disrupts seat allotment processTAMENGLONG | Aug 14
Enraged women disrupted the seat allotment process for Rani Gaidinliu Women Market Tamenglong which was held at the premises of Small Town Committee, ADC Tamenglong on August 13.
As per instructions from the State government in regard to the functioning of the Market by August 15, the District Administration Tamenglong had attempted to allot seats to all registered vegetables vendors. However, just before officials started drawing seats through lottery process, a group of women (along with some males) came and disrupted it. They enquired, “Why the seats were allotted on registered vendors only?”
Even though security forces including Tamenglong police and CRPF personnel were deployed, the seat allotment process was stopped.
The seat allotment committee is headed by SDO Tamenglong, Kachamthai Faiga Gangmei; and SDPO, Tamenglong, Ringthing Hongchui; and extension officer, ADC-Tamenglong, Ningthung Panmei.
It may be mentioned here that there are two types of women groups who sell goods. While one group sells vegetables only in the morning and evening on three market days, the other group sells their wares daily. The group who work on a daily basis are registered and may be classified into four categories which include tea stall owners, vegetables vendors, fish sellers and ready-made garments sellers.
The unregistered group alleged that that daily group (Registered) forced the unregistered vendors to vacate the place and such that they are sitting on the road side despite of life risky. While asking ‘why any women who want to sell their vegetables should have to register?’ they also demanded that unregistered vegetables should also be allowed to sell their vegetables. “Seats should be allotted to them also,” they added.
They also questioned why new enrolments were there in the seat allotment list even though it was stated that newly enrolled vendors would not be entertained.
In the meantime, the old women market place has also been fenced up with GI sheets to stop trade or functioning. The market located at the heart of Tamenglong district headquarter is rather small, and several women sell their wares or vegetables at different places on the road side.
Rani Gaidinliu Women Market Tamenglong was inaugurated on October 30, 2018, by CM, N Biren Singh. Although, the market is one of the ‘100 days pilot project of BJP government’, constructions has not been completed and is yet to be handover to the public. The 183-seated capacity women's market was constructed by Police Housing Corporation as work agency with a budget of Rs 6.4 crores. Even, though the main building has been completed; however, the toilet block and retaining walls still remains incomplete.
