‘Inclusion of art and traditional activities of the State in schools is need of hour’
Academy of Indigenous Music (AIM), Bamonkampu Mayai Leikai performed ‘Gouranga Lila’ at Shri Shri Madan Mohonji Mandir, Kongba Kshetri Leikai, Imphal East, today.
The play was showcased under the aegis of ministry of culture, with an objective to promote and preserve the traditional art form of the state.
The chief guest of today’s function, retired director of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy, Padmashree awardee, S. Thanil Singh said that art and culture of the state and even other states is getting extinct day by day. Acknowledging its significance, government of India is giving due importance in preservation and promotion of various art forms of the country.
He continued that Manipur is endowed with rich culture and tradition and unfortunately youth of the present generation hardly knows about it. The best possible way to revive the disappearing art and culture of the state is to include it as extra-curricular in every schools or educational institutions mandatorily.
Apart from this, intervention of state government in promotion of artists is also highly necessary to preserve and promote indigenous culture and tradition of the state, he suggested.
Stating about the significance of promoting and preserving art and culture, Thanil noted that art and culture can help to bring peace and unity among various nations. Considering this, UNESCO has taken up various activities in relation with promotion of art and culture of its respective countries.
Other dignitaries who attended in the function were retired director of JNMDA, K. Sushilla, member Zilla Parishad Bamonkampu, Imphal East, Golmei Kachungna as president and special guests respectively.
It may be mentioned that ‘Gouranga Lila’ is a traditional performing art form of Manipur that revolves around the life of Hindu lord, Gouranga Mahaprabhu. This historic play was originated during the reign of king Chandrakirti in the 18th century.
The art form is performed by actors of different age groups and can be categorised as an opera heavily influenced by Nata Sankirtana and the elements of dance, musical dancing, dialogues and colourful customs.
