Rights group dissatisfied over appointment of non-tribal directorIMPHAL | Jul 11
All Tribal Rights protection Forum Manipur (ATRPFM) expressed its dissatisfaction over the appointment order of posting a non-tribal as joint secretary and director in Tribal Affairs and Hills department.
The forum expressed that it is not against any individual and community being the director but preferred an individual who is well aware of the needs and problems of the tribal community. It also appealed to the state government to review the order and appoint a new director from the tribal community, failing which the forum shall be compelled to take up necessary actions.
Speaking to media at Manipur Press Club today, president of the Forum, Joseph Rongmei said since the inception of the department, director from the tribal community has been placed at the head of the department and even minister concerned.
He also said that that the department which is dealing with 34 recognised tribes in the state has a huge responsibility. As such the forum prefer an individual who is well versed about cultures, traditions and identity of the tribal to avoid any misunderstanding and conflicts among tribal communities.
“Appointing a tribal director will be beneficial for peaceful co-existence and settlement within the tribal community as the job itself demands an officer who has thorough knowledge about tribal people.
The government should know the facts that there are two major tribes in Manipur who has their own distinct culture and identity, on contrary if the government posted a non-tribal as director there can be a great problem in future.
Joseph also said that any tribal civil society organisations will not be supporting such steps from the government.
