Village chief, nephew killed in Kangpokpi, condemnation pours in from various CVOsKANGPOKPI | Jul 10
Unidentified gunmen suspected to a Kuki militant outfit killed Hengjang Kuki village chief and his nephew today at around 12:30 pm while the duo were reportedly travelling in a private vehicle.
The incident occurred between Keihao and Hengjang village under Island Block in Kangpokpi District around 20/25 km away from Island Sub-Divisional Headquarters.
The deceased Kuki chief was identified as Thangneo Kipgen (58), son of (L) Letkhai Kipgen and Thangminlun Haokip (26) son of Thenthang Haokip.
According to one survivor in the incident, the assailants were six in number and they speak in Kuki dialect and possessed AK rifles and M-16 weapons.
He said that “they shoot in a very close range and right after the firing they come down and enquired about me and the duo killed in the firing. As I told them I am from Bongbal Kholen and the duo were chief of Hengjang and his nephew, they immediately fled the scene,” he said while adding that he could not identify anyone of them.
The assailants involved in the crime and the reason could not be ascertained till the filing of this report.
The killing of Hengjang village chief and his nephew however draw a mammoth condemnation from various civil voluntary organisations right after the incident went viral in social media at around 1:00 pm this afternoon.
Kuki Inpi Kangpokpi District strongly condemned the incident and served 24 hours ultimatum to the state government to book the culprits.
It asked the state government to arrest the culprits before the situation intensify while expressing its bewilderment about the law and order situation in the state and wondered if the government has done their duty enough in order to maintain peace and harmony among various communities of the state.
It also warns that if the culprits are not booked within the stipulated time, any public agitation will be launched under the aegis of Kuki Inpi and the state government shall be solely responsible for any untoward incident.
In a separate condemnation, KSO Sadar Hills and TSA Sadar Hills also condemned the incident in the strongest term.
The KSO Sadar Hills said that such heinous act towards civilian is highly condemnable while adding that everything can be solved through dialogue but such anti-social activities only invite disturbance in the peaceful environment of the society.
It also appeal the assailants involved in the alleged murdered to spell out the reason of the crime at the earliest.
TSA Sadar Hills also condemned the incident and said that such act towards innocent civilian is a barbaric act and highly condemnable while seeking justice to be prevails at any cost.
While demanding the alleged murderer to give reason behind their brutal crime, it appealed to the state government and concerned authority to book the culprits at the earliest.
Meanwhile, the local MDC of Bongbal Kholen District Council Constituency, Thangjamang Kipgen, who is also the president of BJP Sadar Hills District, strongly condemned the’ merciless killing of Thangneo Kipgen and Thangminlun Haokip’
“I strongly condemned the barbaric act and appeal to all peace loving citizens of the state and Bongbalkholen area in particular to refrain from such criminal activities in future”, the local MDC said.
Kipgen Khangthah Kiloikhom-General Headquarters also strongly condemned the incident and demand the assailants to spell out the reasons for the killing.
It said that such cold blooded murder not only disturb the peaceful environment of our society but also harbours the seed of vengeance.
“The Kipgen Khangthah Kiloikhom will not remain silent until justice is served to the victim families and appeal to the state government to book the culprits within 24 hours, failing which intense agitations will be launched with all like-minded organisations and the government will be solely responsible for any untoward incident.
