Sahitya Parishad confers literary awards
Manipur Sahitya Parishad (MSP) conferred its Sahitya Ratna Award to noted writer, Khumanthem Prakash Singh and Sahitya Bhushan Award to distinguished writer, Kshetrimayum Bira for the year 2019.
The awards were presented by renowned nonagenarian writer, Elangbam Sonamni Singh, during the 85th Foundation Day celebration cum 54th Annual Meeting of the Parishad held at Jawaharlal Nehru Dance Academy, Manipur today.
Besides the awards, MSP also honoured another 32 artists, who made major contribution in the field of literature, art and culture.
In his speech as chief guest of the occasion, CAF and PDS minister, Karam Shyam conveyed his appreciation for all the artists, who were honoured today, for their immense contribution in promoting literature, art and culture of the State.
“Literature and Art and Culture are closely associated to each other but the people of the State only appreciate Art and Culture and Sports,” he said while adding that even the State government had also neglected this field till date.
“People usually say that Manipur is being recognised in the world through sports, and arts and culture. But they hardly acknowledge literary works, which are one the most fundamental things that promote and protect art and culture of the state,” he complained.
Suggesting the need of increasing budget allocation for promotion of literature in the State, he said that earmarking only Rs. 1 lakh in the budget would be too difficult to manage. “That amount would not be even sufficient to organise this highly valuable prize distribution ceremony; and so there is an utmost need to increase the budget amount,” Karam Shyam added.
“It is very saddening to know that the organising committee had organised this meaningful function with money solely contributed by some philanthropists. The state should give full support at least for this function,” the minister lamented while also assuring his support in increasing budget allocation for the function in the future.
President of MSP, Kangjam Ibohal Singh presided over the function.
