Package with seeming Uranium ‘Cooperation’ of India markings found at Moreh
What may be termed as out of ordinary, a package supposedly manufactured by Uranium Cooperation of India, suspected to contain explosive materials landed into the hands of a villager at Moreh.
The word “corporation” however is misspelled as “cooperation” in the marking, raising doubts about its authenticity.
At around 8:30 am today, an unidentified individual in facial mask who reportedly spoke in the Kuki dialect left an unidentified object at the residence of a 60-year old woman, Nengkhoneng Munlun of Moreh Ward No. VII. The object which was wrapped in a black polythene bag was left with the assurance from the masked man that it was meant to be kept temporarily.
Nengkhoneng Munlun, in suspicion, reported the matter to Moreh Police, and immediately a team of police personnel led by OC Letkhohao Vaiphei rushed to the spot. The police team after tearing the plastic covering found a package made by the Uranium Cooperation of India which might be used in or as an explosive device, and it was later transferred to a secluded spot.
After the OC of Moreh Police had informed several other senior officials regarding the matter, the spot where the suspected explosive object was kept was kept under strict surveillance by a joint team of Moreh Police personnel, Commandos and Assam Rifles.
A bomb expert team from Assam Rifles, Tengnoupal were earlier called in to ascertain the exact nature of the suspected explosive device; but due to their alleged refusal, teams from Chemistry department and other departments from Manipur University are scheduled to visit the site tomorrow for investigations. However, the possibility of whether the supposed explosive device can be diffused or discarded could not be ascertained yet but Moreh Police is keeping a strict vigil over the spot.
How the container bearing manufacturers details of the Atomics Minerals Directorate (AMD), Director of Atomic Explosion Research Center North Eastern Region-Shillong under the Uranium Cooperation of India, came to end up at Moreh remains a mystery with locals enquiring how it came in the hands of an ordinary member of the public.
The words “Gov’t use only, not for sale, Powder 99 % refined” and “Explosive No. 337/99% Proven 425. Volt 2014” are found inscribed on the container.
The incident came in the wake of heightened security by Assam Rifles along the Indo- Myanmar border concerning Lok Sabha election counting due to be held on May 23. Unauthorised border routes have been sealed and intensified checkings have been carried out at the authorised gates.
