Macha Leima observes its Golden JubileeIMPHAL | Apr 21
Manipuree Chanura Leishem Marup (Macha Leima) today celebrated its 50 years of existence by observing the Golden Jubillee of the organisation at Lamyanba Shanglen today.
Editor of Macha Leima magazine, Haobam Seityabati said the women of today need to follow the roles and responsibilities taken by the traditional Manipuri women. The cultural norms, ideologies and their thinking need to be pursued and nurtured, she said. Besides following the traditional lifestyles, they also need to acquire full education, she added.
Macha Leima has been relentlessly pursuing goals under these ideals and it will continue to do so, she said.
She further said that the organisation was created 50 years back from today, on April 21, 1969. It was founded after several well educated and like minded women came together towards a common goal. At those times, men enjoyed his higher status in the social hierarchy while women only lived in their shadows, she continued.
There was a practice in which men could forcefully drag a woman into a marriage and take her as his wife if he wishes so, she said. The people held this belief that if a man holds an unmarried women’s wrist in public, she has no other option except becoming his wife, she said. This made the female counterparts of the society to stop going outside into the streets for receiving education.
Growing up as a part of that society, she gave her contributions in the united efforts to make the people break away from that sort of culture; she further said adding Macha Leima was a result of those united efforts. The organisation has been working to bring growth in the State economy, she said.
Different measures have been undertaken by Macha Leima for the betterment of women’s lives. “Beginning from 1971, products made from our own resources have been exhibited at Mapal Kangjeibung to promote the use of self made products in the State,” she said.
In 1972, the Macha Leima magazine was published and it started analyzing the deeds, achievements and many roles of women in history, she further said.
Fighting against the violations meted out towards the oppressed women, putting prohibitions against these practices etc. are some of the actions Macha Leima have been taking up so far, she added.
The occasion was attended by advisor, Macha Leima, Huidrom Baraknya, founder secretary, Kh. Ebetombi, live member, Y. Roma.
