Three killed, houses destroyed as freak storm leaves trail of destruction in state
Atleast three women were killed and a number of houses destroyed as a powerful freak storm swept across the state on Monday morning.
According to a report of the meteorological department of ICAR, the wind speed measured 75km per hour, lasted for around 20 minutes. The westerly wind was swept from the Bay of Bengal, added the report.
In Churachandpur district, two women were killed at K. Salemjang village when the house they were taking shelter in collapsed.
The deceased have been identified as Nemdon, 65, wife of Ngulkhomang Doungel of N. Kulbung village who happened to be at K. Salemjang village at the time of the windstorm; and Chinkhohlai, 50, wife of Sehkholien Singson of K. Salemjang village. Late in the afternoon, a team of Churachandpur District Police and Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi (KKL) personnel brought the two dead bodies to the District Hospital morgue for post mortem after which the bodies will be transported back to their respective village, said sources. Till the time of filing this report, no details were available from the District Disaster Management Committee headed by the DC of Churachandpur.
Ironically, Satlianthang at whose house the unfortunate victims were taking shelter, along his pregnant wife Nemneichong and daughter Neihoihkim escaped with minor injuries. They were rushed to District Hospital Churachandpur; and after medical check-ups, they have been discharged.
Meanwhile, the severe storm ravaged most parts of Churachandpur town causing severe destruction and damage of properties. The casualties ranged from roof collapses of several houses including the roof tops of SSPP residential school which were carried off by the strong winds. Kangvai Government School and parts of Vungzagin Senior Secondary school of Mata village also suffered heavy damages. It may be mentioned here at many places in the district, electric power also went down due to the falling of a high power tension tower at Kaivai which may persist for a few days.
The windstorm that started around 9:50 am today also destroyed several houses and government properties notably the District Hospital which surgical wards’ roofs were blown off, and the kitchen of District Family Welfare office. In respect to the situation, SDO of Churachandpur, Thangboi Gangte along with the CMO of Churachandpur, Dr. V C Pau Tonsing; medical superintendent of District Hospital Dr. Zuii and DFW officer, Dr. Jamthanlal conducted a thorough investigation. Later, Thangboi Gangte stated that after assessment of the damage and reports from the medical department, the District Administration will act.
The heavy storms that occurred around 10:00 am today have caused rampant destructions in various areas of Kakching and Thoubal districts.
Amongst the casualties caused by the severe storm, a woman running a “Hotel” (Local Restaurant) at Kakching Wairi Senapati Leikai Lairam Pareng perished at the spot immediately when a large Tarung tree that got uprooted felled over the Hotel along with her. The victim has been identified as Mayanglambam Nungsitombi alias Memcha, 56, wife of (late) Angangcha.
Besides that, the upper parts of the office of SDO, Kakching were also blown off during the storm; and in the process, several official papers were also lost. Major portions of the tin-roofs of Kakching Higher Secondary School’s building were also carried off by the strong winds, and several residences at various localities of the District met with the same fate today.
The storm also took its toll on various residences located near Keirak dam. It is reported that the top portions of Hope Academy located Wangoo Mamang Sabal Leikai, were also carried off by the rampaging wings but fortunately no students of the academy suffered any casualties.
Meanwhile in Pallel, a big tree that got uprooted by the storm felled over the sheds of the local Lai Haraopham destroying them in the process. Similar instances of residences being destroyed and blown off by the storm have also reported from various areas at Hiyanglam and Sugnu.
At Thoubal district, the violent storm has also caused widespread destruction of several residences at Heirok assembly constituency that include homes at Heirok part (ii) Maning Leikai, Moirangthem Leikai and parts of Heirok Keithel. The destructions were witnessed at the areas of Ukhongsang, Shikhong Muslim and various areas of Khongjom too.
Meanwhile, Manipur Student’s Federation (MSF), in a press release, has stated that the students’ organisation had conducted a visit to the areas affected by the heavy storms. “Relief operations including transport and referrals of victims to hospitals and PHCs were conducted by the team from MSF,” the release continued while adding an appeal for people to contribute in relief operations and providing aid to victims of the natural disaster.
Jiribam: A raging storm that occurred around 9:00 am in the morning today ravaged several houses in Jiribam district and destroying various other structures too. The ceilings of Jiri Ema Keithel which were blown off in the storm while the electric posts which felled into nearby trees have resulted in power cuts all over the district.In view of the circumstances, the populace of Jiribam has also made an appeal to authorities concerned to look into the welfare and provide aid to the victims.
Speaking to IFP, Chairman of Borobekra Sub Division Development Organisation, P. Jiten stated that the storm which suddenly occurred out of nowhere have created havoc in the District with several houses being blown and properties destroyed in Borobekara. He further made an appeal to the authorities concerned to look into the matter and commence relief operations at the earliest.
