Malpractice in elections hampers true spirit of democracy: Kaiku
Popular Manipuri film actor, R.K. Somorendro, better known as Kaiku has denounced use of money and muscle power in elections. He was talking to the media at the sidelines of his flag hoisting ceremony at the THAU ground here today.
Kaiku is contesting as an independent candidate in the ensuing Lok Sabha election for the inner seat, which is to be held on April 18. A good numbers of people from the film fraternity turned up to extend their support for Kaiku.
The independent candidate further said that the prevailing culture of using money and muscle power during elections have resulted in failure to produce a true representative of the people.
Denying the allegations of the Congress party that he is bring supported by the BJP, he said that old habit of spreading propaganda should not be practiced anymore, instead the parties and candidates should work for the welfare of the people.
A true representative of the people should know the issues prevailing in the state and understand the sentiment of the people, he added. Such practices spreading lies should be avoided in order to elect a responsible and a better candidate for the future of the people of the state, he said.
Kaiku said, “If I am given the chance to represent the people, I will raise the border issue as the first step and continue to address the issue of Citizenship Amendment Bill and other issues in the state”.
Another popular actor, Gokul while addressing the gathering said, there is need of a young and a new representative in the state, who will be able to address the grievances of the people in the Parliament.
Stating that various issues in the state have been concealed without bringing proper solutions during different regimes, he charged that no leader from the ruling party in the centre have visited the state when it was reeling under different crisis.
Kaiku’s vision for the state includes demanding ST status and indigenous people’s right, youth employment with special emphasis on information technology, improvement in service sector, and focus on home based industries and self-help groups. He has included economic boost for women and senior citizens, safeguarding territorial integrity of the state and repealing AFSPA.
