Defending champion of Kanggui Inter Ward Tournament 2018 Men’s and Women’s Volleyball, Vengthah Ward No.3 retained both the titles of Men’s and Women’s Volleyball in the 15th Kanggui Inter Ward Tournament 2019.
The Volleyball (Men’s and Women’s) final match was played yesterday at Sports Complex, Kangpokpi District Headquarters which was grandly graced by Lunseh Kipgen, chairman, Kangpokpi Town Committee as chief guest and Hekim Hangshing, president, KWWO attended as guest of honour while Tolminthang Misao, president KYU attended as functional president.
“Opportunity is still at large in the field of sports for the women of Kangpokpi but despite such dearth opportunity Kangpokpi women have been struggling hard to excel in sports”, pointed out KWWO President while lauding the women volleyball players of Kangpokpi for their persistent efforts in keeping the spirit of games and sports alive among the women community.
The KWWO President also pointed out that even basis games and sports infrastructures is totally out of sight for women in Kangpokpi which is why many women in the district headquarters loss interest in sports which also account for less women athletic in the town.
The KWWO supreme who regularly had a morning walk and yoga also urged the women of Kangpokpi to get up early in the morning and take a morning walk to keep the healthy and fit.
The women’s volleyball final match was played between Ward No. 9(B) and defending champion Ward No.3 (B) before the men’s volleyball final between Ward No. 2 (A) and defending champion Ward No.3 (A).
Ward No. 3 had scripted record last year after claiming both the title of Men’s and Women Volleyball to become the first ward of Kangpokpi to claim both Men’s and Women’s Volleyball title ever since the introduction of Kanggui Inter Ward Tournament.
To retained the feat, Ward No.3 women (B) team spiked down Ward No.9 (B) through its Spiker sister Luffthem and Kipnu who had already received the best Spiker and Best Player Award in 2014 and 2018 respectively with the support of watertight combination of its Setter Hatneo and Chongboi supported by its middle blocker Choi and Lamneng in three straight set (21-16, 21-20, -21-15).
In Men’s Volleyball final, Ward No.2 (A) almost snatched the title from Ward No. 3 with its stunning comeback in the second and third set (25-21, 25-14) after Ward No. 3 won the first set (25-21) but failed to stop the former champions in retaining the title after winning straight the last two set (25-22, 25-20).
Zion-Paomounsang pair got their act together and with setter Goumang and defensive specialist Amitui, Ward No.3 began to take more control of the game in the first set and subsequently won it. However, Ward No. 2 looked dangerous in the second set with in-form Anil, Gogou and Seiminlal destroying Ward No.3 defense with their sublime attacking skills and won the two (second and third) straight set.
Ward No.3 looked energized in the fourth set as their women players and fans started chanting “Retain the title” from behind them and took control of the proceedings from then on with its two promising Spiker Zion and Paomounsang showering abundant of smashes as Ward No. 2 blockers Paoginmang and Seiminlal appeared clueless against their smashes.
Captain Goumang Vaiphei was consistent in his performance as Ward No. 3 finished a closely fought fifth set to retain the Champions title.
