Need to play our politics for Modi to act
By Oken Jeet Sandham
The greatest fear of Delhi is the “UNITY” of the Northeast (NE) India as they presume that such “UNITY” will become a major threat to the “UNITY OF INDIA”. But is it logical to keep Northeast people divided for the sake of country’s Unity?
But the fact is our NE politicians are seen struggling in the sea of Indian political arena. One of the setbacks on their part is also their failure to understand their roles and limits as elected representatives.
The Interim Budget 2019-20 in Parliament showing the allocation for the North Eastern Areas being proposed to be increased by 21% to Rs 58, 166 crore in 2019-20 Budget Estimates over 2018-19 BE is nothing to be surprised. It is just a little more than half of Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Cost – Rs 90,000 crore. Have our MPs ever thought of examining the budgetary allocations not only to their respective states but also the entire region? Have our MPs and politicians ever sought of taking advice from experts as to why the huge economic imbalances have been there between the NE and the rest of the country. Time has come for the people of the NE India to wake up to thoroughly study as to why they are still underdeveloped and far behind others in this ‘Cyber Age Era.’
One single biggest failure of the Narendra Modi Government is ‘lack of jobs.’ And the Mood of The Nation Poll also says that an NDA victory without a BJP majority will provide a stable government for a full term. But it is not unexpected. Nearly 30 lakh educated unemployed youth are there in the NE and the numbers keep increasing every year and what will be the fate of them if the Government does not think seriously on this. Where will they go? The job security will become out of question after some years and there will be fights and chaos in the region if an immediate attention is not paid.
The fact is the Center has terribly failed to frame clear cut employment policies under various major Ministries. No one knows what are the policies and programs being framed for the educated unemployed youth of the NE nor are our MPs aware of anything in respect of unemployment issues.
We have 39 MPs – 25 Lok sabha and 14 Rajya Sabha. See, they can play huge politics by coming together, and their coming together is more than enough to shake Delhi’s political corridor. Their political wisdom seems to be fast waning. There were NE-related political incidents that could have been used as rallying points by NE MPs but they could not do. We can easily see how the NE MPs have not only terribly failed to come together but also the State Governments on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. Their sectarian politics have sharply divided NE people into ethnic and tribal lines and Delhi continues to fish in troubled waters. That is the reason why even after 70 years of India’s Independence, we could hardly see any solution to any issues of the NE India – be it social, economic, developmental or political.
These continuous hopeless and failed political activities by the NE MPs got the people of NE thinking that Indian democratic system was not working for the growth and benefit of them except creating more haves and have nots, besides systematically destroying the social fabric of them. Now stark reality is the younger generations start hating their representatives thinking that the politics they are playing under the Indian democratic system is not suitable for them. This is not a good sign.
If we want to live at par with the rest of the country in this world’s 2nd most populous country and so-called world’s largest democratic country, we, the NE people, should know how to play politics. There are so many areas where the people of the NE could fight together and bring easily the Center to their knees. There are many issues that could be used as rallying points. How sad that even in Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, more than half of the NE people or say States did not take part in protesting against it. Having said this, one must know that formation of any Governments - be it Central or State - it is only a number-game, nothing else. Let Prime Minister Narendra Modi be anything, he could be a Zero when his party doesn’t have the number in the coming 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.
We need to play our politics for Modi to act.
