CM, cabinet ministers ought to feel ashamed for being silent on CAB: Student bodies
Black flag hoisted decrying CAB by students bodies
IMPHAL | Jan 12
Chief minister, N. Biren and ministers of Manipur ought to feel ashamed of themselves for not being able to raise any sorts of voice towards the Centre opposing the Citizenship Amendment bill (CAB), 2019 though chief ministers of other northeaster states have raised their voice against the bill.
President of All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Manjit Sarangthem said to media during the hoisting of black flag at its head office located at DM university campus, opposing the passing of CAB recently at Lok Sabha.
Decrying the passing of CAB, 2019 at Lok Sabha and condemning the police firing to protestors at Tripura, the hoisting of black flag was observed.
He said the students bodies of the State have strongly condemned the police atrocities against protestors yesterday at Khwairamband market where four were injured. The day is also being observed for not allowing NESO members to meet the injured at Khumlwng hospital, Tripura, he added.
The observation was also taken part by representatives of Manipur Students’ Federation (MSF), Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK) and Apunba Irreipakki Maheirosing Singpanglup (AIMS).
Manjit further said that the chief minister had expressed that the bill will be effective only in Assam but on the other hand, minister of Home, Rajnath Singh has stated that the bill will not be in effect for northeastern states but also other parts of the states of the country.
The decision of state cabinate was an immature decision which should be taken by elementary standards, he added.
It may be mentioned that state cabinet has decided to urge the Centre to exclude Manipur from the umbrella of the CAB, 2019. The meeting also decided to urge central government to give assent to Manipur People’s Protection Bill, 2018.
Manjit said while the state government has been failing to urge the Centre to oppose the bill, other political parties are playing blame game to gain their political mileage. Instead of playing blame game, political parties including ruling parties must be aware of the sentiments of the people of Manipur, he added.
Passing CAB,2019 could be an attempt to eliminate indigenous people of the northeastern states by assimilating people from other region who are going to enter under the umbrella of the bill including illegal migrants from neighbouring countries, Manjit asserted.
Central government keeps a different attitude to the northeastern people apart from mainland India. They want only to extract resources from the region by eliminating the indigenous people of the region, he exclaimed.
Intensified and severe forms of agitation could be followed if the central government passes the bill completely instead of withdrawing the bill immediately, Manjit cautioned. Later, black flags were hoisted at the head offices and branch offices including hill districts of the student bodies.
Meanwhile, demanding to withdraw CAB, 2019 Manipur State Youth Congress (MSYP) has submitted a memorandum to the governor of Manipur. In the memorandum, MSYP urged the governor of the State to appeal the President and Prime Minister to withdraw the CAB in public interest.
