Enough is enough: United Committee ManipurIMPHAL | Jan 10
The recent action of the Centre in passing the Citizenship Amendment Bill clearly indicates that the legitimate demands of the northeastern people had been neglected by the government of India.
Addressing media persons at its office at Lamphel today, secretary general of United Committee Manipur (UCM), Khuraijam Athouba said that the Centre’s act of treating the NE region as liabilities which can be sold anytime, had been witnessed even in the past and passing the CAB in the Lok Sabha has even made their intentions clearer.
He said that passing the bill even though the northeastern people had already submitted several memorandums and initiated various protests, is against the interest of the NE region and it indicates that the legitimate demand and wishes of the northeastern people has been neglected by the government of India.
It also shows that the region has been treated as buffer region and the people are underestimated as subclass citizen that can be suppressed and killed anytime even after neglecting the demands and voices of different chief minister of the northeastern states, which is a clear indication that the northeastern region has been left out from the Indian democracy.
The land of Manipur had been given to Myanmar and even the information and history of the NE in the NCERT and SCERT books has been diluted with the motive to eradicate the historical identity and the political identity, he alleged.
He also said that Manipur which had been playing its part in the formation of Indian Union is still deprived of its political status and it is still suppressed under the martial law of the AFSPA.
Though the mainland India praised the people and the State in their speech, their action shows that Manipur meant nothing to India.
Manipur was a self-sufficient State before but with the captive market and dependent economy of India, the traditional economy of the State has been taken away and the natural resources of the state are also exploited by holding different business summit and other developmental works.
He also informed that Tripura is already dominated by the non-locals and the same process has been applied over other northeastern states particularly in Manipur with the population transfer theory of giving settlement to immigrants and non-locals to suppressed and dominate the State entirely.
It is high time for all communities in the northeastern states to make a united stand and ask them whether the policy of the Indian government satisfy the region and to question the assimilation of northeast with India. The future of the NE region under India should also be questioned he added.
The region must be prepared for future course of action if the Citizenship Ammendment Bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha.
