BJP govt at Centre and State are a serious threat to Indian democracy: O. Joy
“Democracy of India has become completely diluted since the formation of Modi-led BJP government, and the present scenario of India is almost similar to an undeclared emergency,” said 77 years old veteran politician, O. Joy Singh during the felicitation programme organised by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhavan today on his joining the party.
During the reception programme held today, 31 other members who joined Congress Party recently were also felicitated. Maximum of them were former member of BJP, and they joined the new party with the objective of saving “The democratic system of India which is in constant threat under the leadership of Modi-led government.”
O. Joy who joined BJP in September 2015 and quit the party in July this year, stated that all political parties except BJP are joining hands together to save the democratic system and Constitution of India. “People in every nook and corner of India are having a tough time since the advent of this present government,” he added.
“Everyone might be surprised at my joining politics again in my old age. I know that it is my time to give up politics, but thinking about the prevailing scenario of the state which is in worse conditions, I am unable to step back from politics. I still have the strong desire to serve the state at my utmost level to bring some positive changes. This belief has motivated and encouraged me to join the Congress, the party which strictly follow the ideology of unity, integrity, secularism and socialism,” said Joy.
He also stated that according to Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), India has slipped to 42nd place on annual global democracy from 32nd place last year. “Even in the rankings of World Press Freedom Index conducted by Reporters without Borders, India has fallen two places to 138 in a ranking of 180 countries. This clearly that the democratic system is gradually diluting and hence collective effort from every section of society is needed to save the unpredictable fate of India,” he added.
“It was great mistake to have joined the BJP for some years, but now I realise that the party never thinks of inclusive development. The BJP government only knows how to befool people by making tall unfulfilled promises,” he lamented.
O. Joy further appealed people of the state to be very cautious of every act of BJP led government so that the state could be directed to the right path.
Some other senior politicians who were felicitated in today’s reception programme included former BJP candidate of 10-Uripok constituency, Dr. Nameirakpam Dwijamani Singh; former vice-president, BJP Manipur, A.R. Khan and member of Thangmeiband assembly constituency, Ward number II, retired colonel Shantikumar Sapam.
Dwijamani and Abdur Rahman stated that they were in the Congress when they joined BJP attracted by the false promises of the party such as ‘Sabka Sath Sabka Vikas’, but instead the BJP governance brings only hardship in society. Asserting that the BJP has befooled everyone, Dwijamani and Abdur Rahman further stated that they joined Congress party for political reformation.
Congress Legislature leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi asserted that many BJP members including veteran politicians joining the Congress clearly indicates that the downfall of BJP in the state, and this will have a huge impact in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. All of them have lost their trust to BJP government and more members will surely join Congress in the coming days, added Ibobi.
