Mr Cheap Minister
As quite evidently, the state government and the chief minister is drawing in a lot of flak from different organizations and imminent citizens for his big goof up in locking up Kishorchand Wangkhem without any valid reason. This would be the first time that national media has shown Mr Biren as a dictatorial figure and acting without rhyme or reason. Like it or not!
As an observer , we first saw the video posted by Kishorchand and thought what action the government might take, he was arrested earlier for a facebook post but it was also quite surprising to learn that the charges slapped against him were non-cognizable- he could not be arrested as per the charges leveled against him, pointing out that political might was pulled to get him arrested and Biren had his way. Anyway, the All Manipur Working Journalists Union president had apologized to Biren on Kishorchand’s behalf and assurance was given that he would be let go by the CM. Still, he was in judicial custody. So, the CM being all powerful has indeed taken up stern action against him then and there, whether it was called for remains another question.
This time…the seemingly explicit or seditious video and when Kishorchand again posted about Rani Jhanshi having nothing to do with the freedom struggle of Manipur albeit with an overdose of expletives. It was quite amusing to find out that he was arrested again by the government and was charged as being seditious. The trail happened and the court pronounced that what he said was not seditious and let him go. One big hurrah for the judiciary there ! However ,the next day, he was called up by police and escorted from his residence and later thrown into jail, no arrest memo was given. His wife was distraught and had no idea of the episode that was happening, of the sheer imposition that was to happen, of the plans to victimize her husband with sheer might. The woman ran from pillar to post what happened to her husband and cried foul. She was helpless and no one rallied to her cries except for those who cared and remained ethical.
The Press Council of India, MSAD, Indian Journalist Union strongly condemned the arbitrary arrest but the local media and those at the helm of affairs let it go just like that. Comments on social media hint that some editors and AMWJU stakeholders have been bought and that they are slavish to the government. A question here is that AMWJU is affiliated to the Indian Journalist Union and when the IJU has decried the arrest, what did AMWJU office bearers do? Nothing- but washed their hands off the episode citing some accusations against Kishorchand that he was politically inclined towards a party and that he was offensive. They omitted the particular part that a man has been arrested under NSA for saying the F word. So, the public knows where the majority of the media stands, that is well and truly exemplified that the national media cried foul and majority of the local media kept mum. That’s how much some people has slipped down the ethical toilet.
It is well known that some editors and AMWJU president of late has been travelling in Europe, very much sponsored programs and not self sponsored. With the present situation and many scribes shouting foul against the NSA detention, some people with editorial sanction are basking in sunny beaches and peacefully devoid of the imbroglio here and how the press has been slandered and rightfully so.The word Press-titutes, someone uttered before do come in mind.
Jokers are there in every sphere of life and some hold power, there is sadness felt now. Someone said that the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. Here at Imphal Free Press, we will call a spade a spade , a joker as a joker, a thief a thief and that is the way a media is supposed to work and the majority of the Manipuri media needs to introspect and work out the cruxes.
We of late got a criminal defamation case on grounds that Biren-ji is not happy that we called him not being the best 3rd Chief Minister in the entire country. One knows that OK Hotel dishes are tasty and one cannot say otherwise, the majority agrees. But, unlike so in political quarters, one says that OK hotel food is too spicy and BJP bhakts will shout – Hallelujah ! BJP bhakts may say so but Imphal Free Press will not say that OK hotel food is bad. We call it as it is.
Politicians and CMs will go and wither away unlike OK hotel. The taste remains the same and some of us in the media will not sell our soul to a lesser devil. The CM got a taste of the Kishorchand affair and one wonders how it tasted, flashed in the national media and all. Might be hard to digest after all and was it worth it ? Markandey Katju did term you as the Little Dictator, one knows how long dictators lasts! Let’s not be a cheap minister.
