Differently abled persons should not be termed as ‘disabilities’ : Karam Shyam
Revenue minister, Karam Shyam has urged the people to stop using the term, ‘disabilities’ while referring to differently abled persons while saying, “They can do what normal people could not do. “We should encourage them without any discrimination such as calling them disabled or people with disabilities,” he added
He made the statement on the closing ceremony of the ‘6th Winter Disabled Mela for Inclusive Society for all held at Tera Primary School. He said there are more than 54,000 differently abled persons in Manipur.
Most of the differently abled persons do not get benefits from government due to lack of awareness or lack of concern by officials. Such kinds of losing benefits and other opportunities could be avoided if they approach the officials. In the officials do not give support then the government will extend its help, so they should approach directly to the government, he stated.
He asked all the organisation of differently abled person to join together and work so that all the demands and can be raised forcefully and effectively. Pension schemes for differently abled persons below 80 years of age are not being received fully. So the Government will help them get pension scheme fully.
Instead of wasting money on elections, if candidates spend money on better work of the welfare of the assembly constituencies than it will help in developing the locality, he said.
Former MLA Patsoi assembly constituency, Sapam Kunjakeshor alias Keba who is also vice president of NEIDP said that differently abled persons have started to involve themselves in the progress of development.
They have started coming forefront in doing many things so people who are not physically challenged should also get involved in their progress and give them encouragement, he said. People should take part on the change coming to differently abled persons.
He expressed his hope that under the leadership of new government led by N.Biren, with the support and help provided to differently able persons, Manipur can be called a model state for differently abled persons all over the world.
On the ceremony, it was announced that Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons will make free Pan Cards for differently abled persons.
The dignitaries present during the closing ceremony visited the Mela stalls. M. Sumati Devi, National Awardee for Outstanding Creative Adult Persons with Disabilities 2018 was honoured in the reception ceremony.
Certificate was distributed to differently able persons who took part at the Mela.
The closing ceremony was attended by state commissioner for persons with disabilities, Dr. Rk Kumarjit; Sapam Leikai Gram Panchayat ward member, RK Geeta Devi; zonal education officer, Zone 1, Sucheta Khumakcham; chairman, organisation committee, 6th Winter Disabled Mela, Chirom Opendra; social scientist, Dr. Dhanabir Laishram; chief editor of Pheejigi Manilakta, Nimol Ningombam; National Awardee, Laimayum Amarendra Sharma.
6th Winter Mela for Inclusive Society for all was organised by Relief Centre for the Welfare of Differently Abled Persons, Northern Disability Institute, All Manipur Disability Right Network, All tribal disabled union, The symbiosis society, Society for empowerment of the disabled persons, The deaf welfare organisation, Eramdam Apunba disabled welfare association.
