World Soil Day observed

World Soil Day was celebrated on the December 5 by KVK Imphal West In collaboration with: AICRP on Soil Test Crop Response (STCR), IISS BHOPAL at the premises of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR Manipur Centre, Lamphelpat.
Member, Potshangbam Zilla Parisad, Laishram Boby Devi and joint director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, I. Meghachandra Singh attended as chief guest and president respectively, said a release. Programme coordinator, KVK Imphal West, N. Arunkumar Singh and Dr. Tensubam Basanta were also on the dais, it added.
R.K.Nirmala Devi delivered welcome address on the occasion, the release further informed. In his inaugural speech as the chief guest, Laishram Boby Devi stated that farmers are highly responsible for preserving soil health and farmers should be dignified to carry out this responsibility for future generation. I. Meghachandra Singh also stated that the soil should not be made more polluted with misuse of fertilisers and other agricultural chemicals, it further said.
In his keynote address, N.Arunkumar Singh added that the theme of world Soil Day this year is “Be the solution to soil pollution” and the use of soil pollutants line plastic and agri-chemicals should be minimised.
Soil Health Cards were distributed to members of 10 Farmers’ Clubs and 150 farmers were present. Er. Kh. Hera Singh pronounced vote of thanks.
In the technical session, Er. Kanta Singh delivered a talk on ‘Importance of Soil Testing’ and Dr. T. Basanta Singh on ‘Soil Fertility and Management.’
At Churachandpur distirct, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Churachandpur, ICAR-RC NEH Region Manipur Centre observed World Soil Day at ICAR-KVK conference hall, Pearsonmun today.
During the observance, chief technical officer (Animal Science) of KVK Churachandpur, Dr. W. Ragen Singh delivered the welcome address, followed by speech from chief of Songpi village, Leilhing as guest of honour and speech from MDC of Lanva ADCC constituency, T. Khaikhomang as chief guest.
It was attended by village chief, farmers and ICAR staffs where Soil Health Card was distributed to the farmers by the chief guest and guest of honour.
Khaikhomang said that soil testing and conservation is very important as it can lead to more production. He also told the farmers to ask ICAR-KVK to test the soil in their fields while adding that there is a scheme by the government to help the farmers whose paddy fields are in bad condition for harvesting due to lack of rain.
While giving key note address, senior scientist and head of ICAR KVK Churachandpur, Dr. Niranjan Lal said that soil is like a mother and when the mother is sick, children face hardship. Caring the soil is a must so the World Soil Day is observed to give awareness on the importance of keeping the soil healthy, he added.
At Jiribam district, A World Soil Day observation programme was held today at Pukhao Laipham, Imphal East, jointly organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Imphal East and Village Development Sporting Club (VDSC), Laipham Khunou.
The programme was attended by Ningthoujam Sanatomba of Makeng Dolaithabi Zilla Parishad, and director of Extension Education, CAO, Imphal, professor, R.K. Saha as chief guest and president respectively while ward member, Pukhao Laipham, Nongthombam Kabichabndra and president of VDSC, T. Tolenjao shared the dais as guests of honour.
The dignitaries at the programme delivered speeches on various soil related topics including Soil tests for fertility, Usage of organic manure, and Rearing of earthworms and making Compost amongst others.
During the technical session, experts from KVK, Imphal East, presented sessions on various topics such as ‘The advantages of soil testing and the methods to collect soil samples’, ‘Rearing earthworms to produce manure and increase incomes’ and ‘How to utilise household waste as manure’ etc.
Soil Health cards along with winter agricultural seeds were distributed to the 124 farmers who took part in the programme.
