Why Jiribam district is not included as part of Sangai Festival? : NEIDP
JIRIBAM| Dec 5
Media chairman, North East India Development Party(NEIDP),Jiri District Committee, F. Ahmed Sazbam, in a press release, has appealed the government of Manipur to include Jiribam as part of the Sangai Festival from the year 2019 onwards.
The famed Sangai Festival commenced from the year 2010 and it has completed 8 years in 2018. On the onset, the festival was based on culture but later it was organised under the name of ‘Manipur Tourism Festival’ which finally culminated as ‘Sangai Festival’.
However, in the whole 8 years of its existence, except for some valley areas of the State, Jiribam district has been excluded from the festival. But amongst all the districts of Manipur, Jiribam can be considered as one of the most backward and underdeveloped district.
Sangai Festival is the biggest festival of the State and there are more than thousands of people who want to attend the festival; however, distance factors amplified by bad road conditions and economic difficulties have left them with no option but only to express regret and accept the reality. To visit Imphal is a problem with lots of inconvenience in arranging accommodations and the festival which has been held annually for eight years has remained a distant dream for the locals of Jiribam; so in order to make the festival more inclusive and in the interest of the people of Jiribam, F. Ahmed Sazbam has appealed the government of Manipur to include Jiribam as part of the Sangai Festival from the year 2019 onwards in a press release issued today.
The release further stated that organising part of the Sangai Festival at Jiribam will be quite beneficial as there are a lot of potential attendees not only from some districts of Manipur but from districts in the neighbouring state of Assam such as Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj not to forger the neighbouring states of Tripura, Meghalaya and Mizoram. Cachar district along withHailakandi andKarimganj is in close proximity to Jiribam with only 80-90 km distance separating them from the district, it said.
Besides handicrafts from Tripura, folk dances of Meghalaya and traditional items from Mizoram, there are also handicraft items from the Bangla, Bengali and Cachari community which could be an asset for the Sangai festival, it continued while adding that if the mentioned items can be exhibited, it would be most beneficial for the festival. In view of the mentioned points, the release appealed the state government to consider them and arrange for the inclusion of Jiribam district as a part of Sangai festival.
It might also be mentioned that a local of Jiribam who had applied for a stall had expressed disappointment at his rejection on social media platforms. Jiribam district besides its lack of infrastructures as a district has problems with the existing road conditions adding to the inconveniences, the release continued while asserting that it seems like indifference from the state government.
However, as a unit of Salai Holding Private Ltd., Imphal, a stall at Sangai Festival 2018 was allocated to Jiri Smart Society and it was able to showcase and sell handloom and handicrafts items from Jiribam district which may be considered as a successful venture, it added.
While stating that the appeals from NEIDP would surely be considered by the state government, the release from NEIDP asserted that there is a huge potential in the inclusion of Jiribam district as a part of Sangai Festival.
