MPCC organises protest against demonetisation
IMPHAL | Nov 8
In a display of objection against demonetisation and demanding the resignation of Narendra Modi from the post of Prime Minister, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) organised a protest today in front of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regional branch.
The protest was held under the banner “Protest against the 2 years completion of demonetisation” in front of RBI regional branch located at Lilashing Khongnangkhong, Opposite Manipur Legislative Assembly, Imphal at about 11.30 am.
Speaking to media persons, president of the party, T.N. Haokip stated that due to demonetisation, laymen of the country have been adversely affected and suffering from the past two years. “India will face worst financial crisis soon if the International Monetary Fund (IMF) resumes the trend of demonetisation,” he said adding that MPCC condemns such form of governance and Modi must resign from the post of Prime Minister.
While stating that demonetisation was implemented by the BJP government with the objective to wipe out black money from the country, former MLA, T. Mangibabu asserted that about 99 percent of money has been converted into new currency notes but it has failed to bring out any black money. Demonetisation was implemented to abolish the poor, small as well as medium entrepreneurs instead of rooting out black money, he alleged.
It may be mentioned that demonetisation was implemented by Modi government on November 8, 2016 with an objective to wipe out black money. It also announced that old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1000 currency notes will be banned. With the intense announcement of demonetisation there was a prolonged cash shortage in the entire country with even people dying while trying to exchange old currency notes at banks.
According to a 2018 report from the Reserve Bank of India, approximately 99.3 percent of the demonetised banknotes, or Rs 15.30 lakh crore (15.3 trillion) of the Rs 15.41 lakh crore that had been demonetised, were deposited with the banking system.
“Demonetisation was implemented against the constitution of India and to affect the poor of the country. Modi must resign from the post of Prime Minister immediately if the government continues further layman and poor would wipe out from the country,” T. Mangibabu added.
During the protest, the participants chanted slogans such as ‘We condemn demonetisation’, ‘Down with BJP government’ etc. while others were witnessed holding placards that read ‘Shame on Modi’, ‘Demonetisation is against the poor’ and ‘Modi government is killer of poor people of India” amongst others
MLA, R.K. Imo; president of Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee, L Tilotama; MLA Keisham Meghachandra; president of state youth Congress, Amir Hussein and other members of the party also took part in the protest.
