Air and noise pollution level in Imphal exceeds standard limit
IMPHAL | Oct 10 : Forty eight percent of diesel driven vehicles in the city were found to be beyond the permissible limit of vehicular emission (65 HSU) as stated in the PUC norms of India.
When Manipur Pollution Control Board Office (MPCB) conducted a test on air pollutants in and around Imphal market, the overall survey result showed that Keishampat Junction, Wahengbam Leikai, Head Post Office, Kalimai Mandir, Rajbhavan Road, Uripok, NC Road near Moirang Leirak Machin, Nagamapal are the areas which are beyond the National Ambient Air quality standards.
Moreover, the ambient noise level at many important places of Imphal city has crossed the limit. The areas included Bir Tikendrajit park, Governor’s Road, lamlong Bazaar, Singjamei parking, Kwakeithel Bazaar, Tera Bazaar, Chingmeirong Khongnang Karak, Keishampat Junction, Waheng Leikai, Head Post office and near Kalimai Mandir, Nagamapal Singjubung Leirak, UK road near Ibotonsana and Sagolband Moirang Leirak Crossing.
While highlighting the different steps and measures taken up by MPCB office at Lamphelpat, its L. RadhaKishore Singh said that the state will face a big pollution problem unless a preventive measure is taken up regarding the noise and air pollution.
He further said that creating and maintaining a pollution free environment should be the first priority and other policy and programmes can be implemented later because development will not be possible if the people are not healthy.
Though other states have banned the use of vehicles which are more than 15 years old, many old vehicles are still plying on the roads of the state.
While appealing the people to buy only new vehicles, Radhakishore further said that MPCB will ban all the vehicles exceeding 15 years and penalty will be given to those who break the rule.
He also appealed the masses to be aware of the harms of pollution and also requested all the department concerned to perform their work with sincerity and honesty.
Radhakishore further appealed the public to minimise the use of crackers in the upcoming Durga Puja and Diwali festivals and also said that an order for compulsory use of sound limiter machine in all loud speakers has been given to all the deputy commissioners of different districts and the deputy general of police.
