Smriti Irani assures continuous Central assistance for development of textile industry in state
IMPHAL | Oct 9 : Union minister of Textiles, government of India, Smriti Zubin Irani urged the state government to lay the foundation of Eri Spinning Mill Project, which was commissioned by Central government to the tune of Rs.22 crore by next month.
The union minister was speaking during the inaugural function of the three-day Silk Expo Cum Workshop on Silk Samagra held at Manipur Sericulture Project Management Complex, Sangaipat Imphal East today. It was jointly organised by department of Sericulture, government of Manipur and Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, government of India.
Delivering her speech as special guest of the function, Irani, who came to the state to attend today’s function, said that Central government had initiated the establishment of Eri Spinning Mill recently considering silk production and cultivation as one of the reliable sources of income for the people of Manipur.
The project was proposed with the vision of providing jobs to many weavers of the state. So there will be a great change in silk industry of the state if this project is materialised soon, she maintained.
She said that ‘Silk Samagra’ is an initiative of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to ensure possibility of exponential growth in silk sector. It is an endeavour not only to increase the income of weavers but also to achieve highest position in silk production and cultivation in the world, moreover, currently India placed in second position in this sector, she added.
Considering the prospect of developing silk industry in northeast India, she informed that, the Central government under the supervision of Narendra Modi had increased the funding for North East Region Textile Promotion Scheme (NERTPS) under which a large number of textile parks and textile units are currently functional in the northeast region.
“There is a great change even in allocation of fund in this sector since the advent of new government. In the year 2013-14, the fund allocated under NERTPS was only Rs.2.86 crore. However, in the past four years of NDA government, Rs.839 crore had already been spent for the growth of textiles industry in the northeast region”, said Irani.
The union minister was highly fascinated with the skills possessed by Manipuri weavers in terms of weaving clothes as well as the traditional technology of spinning the cocoon.
To raise the income of weavers, she urged the chief minister to ensure benefits of Mudra Yojana to weavers across the state. Various researches and studies had found that weavers had received benefits under Mudra Yojanaa and their income had gone up by 50 percent, she added.
As a part of the programme, Irani distributed Rs.1,73,97,200 through DBT to 322 beneficiaries of Integrated Sericulture Development Project (ISDP-Hills) for the construction of Individual Adult Rearing House (IARH).
A booklet on Silk Samagra Workshop was also released and also inspected the stalls of Silk Expo. The three-day Silk Expo and Workshop on Silk Samagra is jointly organised by department of Sericulture, government of Manipur and Central Silk Board, ministry of Textiles, government of India.
The chief guest of today’s function, chief minister, N. Biren Singh assured the union minister that the foundation of Eri Spinning Mill will be laid down by the end of this month.
He stated that the people of the state are bestowed with so much of God gifted and possess work culture, but due to lack of opportunity and exposure they got discouraged to utilise it. However with the formation of NDA-led government, the work culture is gradually reviving, he added.
The function was also attended by Commerce and Industry minister, Thongam Bishwajit Singh as president.
