CJM Imphal sends six teachers and seven students of MU to jail : Pro VC told police that agitators made life attempt on him
IMPHAL | Sept 22 : The chief judicial magistrate, Imphal West yesterday has remanded six teachers and seven students of Manipur University to judicial custody for 15 days and two students to police custody for five days.
All the six teachers and nine students among the arrested 89 students were produced before the court and the remaining students were released yesterday evening.
The six teachers are identified as professors, N. Santomba, Chungkham Yashawanta, Sougaijam Dorendrajit, L. Bishwanath Sharma, L. Sanjukumar and Yengkhom Raghumani. The seven students are L. Renold, Kh. Joychand, M. Santosh, P. Romarjit, Kh. Sushilkumar, L. Peter and Ngamkholen Mate.
The two students remanded to police custody are identified as cultural secretary of Manipur University Students’ Union, Laishram Robindro and Irom Kennedy.
According to the submission of the investigation officer, the students and teachers were arrested following a complaint lodged by pro vice-chancellor, K. Yugindro stating that he along with registrar (in-charge), M. Shyamkesho were kidnapped by the some members of the varsity community and took them to an unknown room when they were visiting the A-block of the varsity to get first-hand account of the overall situation.
Later, both of them were harassed and grilled for nearly three hours inside the room followed by forcibly extraction of their signature that they would not make another bid to enter the office of the varsity, it added.
The complaint also stated that they were allowed to leave the room after obtaining their signature and moreover some students and faculty of the university launched a sudden attack on them using deadly weapons like sticks and stones with the apparent attempt to kill them but they somehow managed to escape from the spot.
The investigation officer of the case prayed for judicial custody remand for the six teachers and seven students and police remand for the two students for smooth investigation of the case.
Meanwhile, a release by signed by VC in-charge, K. Yugindro Singh has stated that the arrested six teachers have been put under suspension as they have been remanded into judicial custody.
