Conversion of Pumlen Pat to Sangai conservation reserve opposed
IMPHAL | Aug 24 : Women’s organisations and clubs of Noimakhong, Kakching district have strongly opposed the recommendation of wildlife state board to convert Pumlen Pat as conservation reserve for the state animal Sangai.
In this connection, a press conference was jointly convened by Nongmaikhong Apunba Meira Paibi, Socio-Economic Development Organsiation Nongmaikhong, Nongmaikhong Youth Development Association and Nongmaikhong Awang Social Reformative Association and Nonmaikhong at Manipur Press Club, Majorkhul.
President of Nongmaikhong Awang Social Reformative Association, Salam Joy said the main objective of conserving the endangering species, Sangai will not be achieved from this lake. It will rather give a big blow to the people residing around the lake, especially those who rely on the lake for their livelihood and also to Sangai itself.
He continued that Pumlen Pat is not a right habitat for Sangai as the deer prefers to live on a floating lake whereas Pumlen Pat is not, and food they take are not grown in this particular lake. So instead of conserving Sangai, it will lead to the process of extinction, he further said. It will be much better to withdraw the recommendation, he added.
Condemning the recommendation as a wrong step, he stated crores of Rupees is being invested in Keibul Lamjao National park, the only home for Sangai, with the aim of conserving it but people hardly see any Sangai out there. How they will conserve this endangered species in unsuitable environment, he questioned.
Whenever any developmental projects are taken up by state government, it makes people suffer to a great extent, he said adding some of the cases are Loktak project and Ithai barrage. The state government should think twice before taking any developmental projects, it added.
“People of Nongmaikhong support Sangai conservation project as it is the pride of the state but we are not in position to accept the recommendation,” he added.
He cautioned to launch various forms of agitations if the recommendation is not withdrawn.
