MU impasse imperils career of 16,000 students : Central university teachers show solidarity to varsity community
IMPHAL | Jul 10 : Career of around 16,000 students pursuing sixth semester in 86 institutes affiliated to Manipur University are in peril as an impact of the impasses in the university over vice-chancellor ouster campaign.
The agitation initially launched by Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) demanding removal of vice-chancellor, A.P. Pandey and later joined by Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs’ Association (MUSA) has reached 41 days.
Showing solidarity to the agitation, six deans and the entire 32 heads of departments of the university have tendered their resignation from their dean and HoD posts.
A relay hunger strike launched by the university community has also entered its second day, and it is scheduled to continue till July 21. Today, departments of Arts Science, Anthropology and Foreign Language took up the hunger strike.
MUTA spokesperson, Debananda Ningthoujam said if the government fails to remove the ‘irresponsible’ vice-chancellor by July 21, the university community will launch more intensive forms of agitation.
He said before July 21, the university community is also all set to launch a mass rally in the heart of Imphal city together with other local bodies and public of the state.
MUTA, MUSA and MUSU stand firm on decision not to retreat until Pandey is removed from the vice-chancellor post, added the spokesperson.
Federation of Central Universities Teachers Association (FEDCUTA) today expressed its complete solidarity with MUTA as well as other sections of the varsity community and appealed to the visitor to immediately institute an independent enquiry into the charges against the vice-chancellor.
According to a release, the association also strongly condemned the brutal lathi charge on a peaceful assembly of students who had gathered outside the chief minister bungalow to appeal for his intervention in the release of the mark sheets.
FEDCUTA also appealed the governor to intervene in the matter to ensure that normalcy is restored in the varsity and student’s careers are not jeopardised.
MUSA president, Mayanglambam Dayaman asked the state government to change the habit of keeping the career of students in danger for some political and financial gains from the Centre.
He said the officials of the university and other authority concerned who are supporting the ‘irresponsible’ vice-chancellor are all banned to enter the university campus, they should held responsible if they enter to the varsity campus.
Stating that the governor and chief minister should resolve the issue at the earliest, he appealed to the civil and students bodies, public and guardians to support the agitation and help in ending the issue.
The student leader also asked Pandey to immediately stop threatening of students, staffs and teachers of the varsity.
The university community asked Pandey to immediately discontinue his disrespect to the people of the state and vacate his position and save the wastage in maintaining him in his quarter without the varsity getting anything positive in return.
Asserting that there is no PRO in the Manipur University Act so nobody has the authority to regulate any regulatory statement in the name of PRO of the varsity, the community asked Pandey not to drag the governor and chief minister in his ignoble self-style PRO office statement.
