Joint teams of Kolkata, Manipur police recover cars stolen from Kolkata in Imphal
IMPHAL | Jul 10 : A team of anti motor theft squad detective department, Kolkata with assistance from anti vehicle theft team, have recovered nine vehicles which were stolen from Kolkata city in Manipur, during a series of operation launch in the past four days.
It has been informed that most of the vehicles were stolen from Kolkata city between February to April.
As per the requisition by the Kolkata team on July 6, the state assisted them in recovering the stolen vehicles from various police stations in Imphal areas and also arrested five persons, said Meghachandra SP Imphal East briefing media persons on Tuesday.
“There are over 30 cases of stolen vehicles from the city, which we believed are in Imphal,” said an officer leading the Kolkata detective department team.
He said the department had earlier recovered some vehicles from Imphal before adding the nine recovered vehicles would be taken back to the city in few days time.
The Kolkata police reportedly have taken back eight cars stolen from the city which were recovered from Imphal, on March last.
Manipur has become notorious for being the dumping ground for stolen vehicles from outside the state, as these vehicles are sold at throwaway price in the state.
“There is no specific price tag on these stolen cars, it depends on how desperate the situation is. You can sometimes get a normal car like alto for just 80 thousand to one lakh rupees when the gangs are on the run”, quipped the Imphal East SP.
The anti vehicle theft team is working hard to crack the modus operandi of some of the gangs involved in this racket in coordination with other states as well, he added.
Apart from the nine vehicles, the Manipur team also recovered five vehicles since the past few months.
The cooperation of all concerned is being sought to prevent thefts and not to fall prey to heavily reduced price vehicles being sold in the state. One must verify properly and the assistance of the AVTT may also be sought if necessary”, said SP Imphal East.
