Civil bodies want local MLA’s intervention in rape cases
IMPHAL | May 15 : Civil bodies claimed that handing a chairman post of Manipur Building and Others Construction Workers Welfare Board to Sekmai MLA, who is the accused of Thagmeiband rape case, is an act of the government giving promotion to a person involved in crime.
The civil bodies are Socialist Students’ Union of Manipur (SSUM), Proletarian Feminist Movement Manipur and Thangmeiband Apunba Nupi Lup.
Briefing to media persons today at SSUM office at Keishampat, Imphal its co-convenor, Bushan Longjam said that there are many rape cases where the victim has not disclosed the incident to anyone due to fear of social stigma.
He also said that if justice is not delivered to the victims of rape cases, then victims of rape cases may not disclose the matter in the future, thinking that they will never get justice.
Stating that there is a big political pressure regarding the Thanga gang rape case, he said “it is very unfortunate that the Thanga MLA is remaining silent regarding the matter.”
The co-convenor claimed there has been a threat to the Thanga rape victim family and the victim health is in bad condition.
If any unwanted thing happens to the family and the victim of the Thanga rape case, the government should be held full responsible as it failed to arrest one of the accused, he said.
Bushan asked the government to stop the culture of shielding rape accused for having political and money power.
Asking the Thangmeiband MLA whether it is right to keep silent regarding the incident the co-convenor warned to boycott Thangmeiband MLA and Thanga MLA if there remained silent over the matter.
