UPC observes it first birth anniversary
THOUBAL | May 15 : The first birth anniversary of United Progressive Club, Wangjing Wangkhei under Thoubal district was held today at the community hall of Wangjing Laikon.
It is said that the club was founded with the purpose to abolish intoxicants and substance abuse from the communities.
The occasion today was attended by MLA Wangning Tentha assembly constituency, P. Brojen as chief guest, president UPC, Th. Prabinkumar as president and retired teacher of Y.K College, Wangjing, L. Bondash, senior lecturer, S. Chaoba and vice-chairperson of Wangjing- Lamding Council, H. Gourango as guests of honour.
P. Brojen said what the workers of UPC are actively doing against drugs, is worthy of encouragement. One feels proud to learn that the club has reached up till Pallel while trying to round up drug abusers, he said. The role of youths in brining development in society is big, he added.
“As children are the assets of the parents, we become restless when they fall into the clutch of drugs; they must be brought towards the right direction,” he said.
The people need to join hands in the attempt to abolish substance abuse. The public should give support to the steps currently being taken up by chief minister, N. Biren against drugs, he further said.
He also expressed the need for the people to work hard and give focus to agriculture; to improve the State’s economy and that such measure should be taken up as a means for the people to steer away from drugs.
Citing the purpose of founding UPC, secretary, M. Kumar said many youths have ended their lives early by drugs, the number of persons killed by intoxicants like alcohol and others substances have exceeded the number of deaths caused by incurable diseases. To give relief from such a situation, the club was founded with the like minded people of Wangning Tentha area with the sole purpose to save the youths from drugs, he said.
He further said the club has gone through many struggles since its establishment last year. However, with the immense help given by the people and the moral support provided by Thoubal district police in many fields, several youths who had been abusing drugs were rounded up and consultations were provided to them. When required, some drug abusers were sent to rehabilitation centres after consulting with their parents, he said. He further appealed not to sell any form of intoxicants and drugs at the areas of Wangjng Tentha that falls under the vicinity of the club.
President of Lamding Educated Welfare Association (LEWA) club, Kh. Ojit stated that drug addiction is like a disease, and they can be treated similar to treating a disease.
The occasion was also attended by the leader of Wangjing village Meira Paibi lup.
