CM and transport department deny decision to ban diesel auto
IMPHAL | May 14 : “The government never passed any order that diesel autos have to stop plying, I am surprised by the reaction of the drivers,” said chief minister N. Biren Singh. He further said the 48 hour diesel auto-rickshaw strike as unwarranted and putting the bullock card before the bull.
“There was a discussion from concerned departments of the rising pollution both in emission and sound from the diesel autos and there was a resolution that we need to survey the situation, but there is no immediate ban and we were thinking of working out amicable logistics only”, said the chief minister.
Biren said he will act as per the public sentiments. “Strike or no strike, if the public feels that certain action is required, then we will proceed,” he hinted. Biren requested all organisations from imposing any sort of dictate which may affect the normalcy of the state and warned of taking up legal action if needed.
State transport department also clarified that the Traffic Regulation and Parking Committee (TRPC) has not taken any decision of banning diesel auto-rickshaw, magic van and winger.
Briefing media persons today at the transport directorate office at New Secretariat, Imphal the department’s director, C. Arthur said there has been a miscommunication between the department and the transporter unions.
He said TRPC held a meeting to reduce the congestions and noise pollution in the city area as per their decision they have not decided to ban the auto, magic and wingers.
The term and reference of the meeting are for causing advancing OD survey, analysis of per capita travel demand of Imphal East and West districts approaching to Imphal city centres, peak hour, peak direction trip study towards and head way calculation of establishing the demand and supply status of Imphal city, he added.
To formulate a concrete module for carrying out the above surveys with requisite quantum of manpower and resources behind the time frame of three months from the date of constitution of the committee and to formulate a sustainable multi modal transit corridor at 12 different designated locations for smooth integration, continued the director.
The department appealed to the unions to call off the 48 hours cease work strike which started from last mid-night.
According to the department records the numbers of diesel auto rickshaw acquiring permits are 2133 out of a total of 7655 auto running in the Imphal city.
