Pemikhong flood scheme in two years
IMPHAL | Mar 12 : Pemikhong, a strategic flood management plan scheme which has been approved under Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources during this financial year will be implemented during 2018-19 and 2019-2020 financial years.
It was informed by chief engineer of department of water resources, Ksh. Pritam Singh in the series of press conference organised by DIPR at the premises of its office, Moirangkhom today.
The department is planning to recreate water bodies at Lamphel and for this project the concerned authority acquired 442.6 acres of land, he said.
The project will work out collectively with other departments particularly tourism, environment and fisheries, said Pritam.
He stated the flood control sector is taking up improvement of existing water bodies such as Lamphelpat, Waithoupat, Irong Nallah (Upper) and Irong Nallah (Lower) for mitigation of flood problem. This project has been approved under Repair, Renovation and Restoration of ministry of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation.
The department is also planning to cultivate aromatic plants at the catchment areas of river as an alternative measure of flood control, he said.
He explained the process of eviction under the flood zoning act 1978 is almost completed. So the department can successfully go ahead with the river dredging project.
The on-going multipurpose project such as Khuga Multipurpose project, Dolaithabi Barrage Project and Thoubal Multipurpose projects are under prime minister special economic package (Nov 2004).They are targeted to complete by 2018, March 2019 and March 2019 respectively.
He said tunnel-1 constructed between Thoubal dam and Chingkhei Water Treatment Plan is already completed and the second is 80 percent completed.
Other department officials attended in the conference were additional chief engineer Y. Jogeshwar Singh, superintending engineer S.N. Albert and superintending engineer P. Ingocha Singh.
