Tumukhong people threatens to dismantle Mapithel dam
Chairman of Mapithel Dam Affected People, Yumlembam Thoiba made the warning during a press conference held today at Tumukhong community hall, Irilbung block of Imphal East district.
The village does not enjoy any benefits from central sponsored welfare schemes. At this state the issue of commissioning of Mapithel dam came up without considering the ill impact to the life of villagers, said Thoiba.
The state is planning to inaugurate the dam during the proposed visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the state on March 15.
He said before the construction of the dam, Tumukhong village was one of the resourceful villages which have good potential in any kind of production. Most of the people at downstream area are daily wage whose primary source is Thoubal river. But after the construction of the dam and with the blockage of Thoubal river people of downstream area will be doomed.
The state started constructing the dam by making false promises to the innocent villagers. Instead of bringing welfare, people are left in the worst situation. Students start leaving their education due to incompatibility in financial condition, Thoiba added.
He said the construction of dam not only cut off the livelihood source of the villagers but also make the village road condition drastic. The village is also facing problems on drinking water due to the blockage of Thoubal river stream. Representatives are elected by people with the faith of bringing good administration. But when the people are in deep trouble, the issue has not been raised in the House, Thoiba condemned.
Chingakham Ibemhal, a villager said the state has released many economic packages for the dam affected people but only in paper works.
Ibemhal said MAHUD minister, Th. Shyamkumar who was elected from this area blamed his people for contaminating the river. The river is contaminated with the blockage of the water by the dam and not by the people. The minister should clarify, said Ibemhal.
The ministers and the authority should come and see the ground reality before blaming the villagers for the river contamination, and reveal the reality in the House, said Chingakham Ibemhal.
Due to the worst condition of village roads people are facing many hardship problems during the time of health emergency, she lamented.
Later the Tumukhong villagers shouted slogans condemning the plan to commission Mapithel dam. They shouted, “Until state arrange alternative measures for livelihood of Tumukhong, inauguration of dam is not possible”.
