Bappi Lahiri dies at 69

Indian singer-composer Bappi Lahiri died on Wednesday in Mumbai after prolonged illness.

Indian singer-composer Bappi Lahiri, popularly known as 'Disco King' died on Wednesday in a Mumbai hospital. He was 69.

The singer, born on November 27, 1952 in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, passed away at Criti Care Hospital, Navi Mumbai, after prolonged illness, hospital sources said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was saddened by the loss and conveyed condolences to his family and admirers. He took to social media and posted a picture of him with the music icon.

"Shri Bappi Lahiri Ji’s music was all encompassing, beautifully expressing diverse emotions. People across generations could relate to his works. His lively nature will be missed by everyone. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti," the prime minister tweeted on Wednesday.

Several State leaders, musicians, fans and admirers of the music legend paid condolences and tribute to the singer.

"Shocked to hear about the untimely demise of legendary singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri. A boy from our North Bengal, he rose  to all-India fame and success by the dint of his sheer  talent and hard work, and made us proud by his musical contributions," tweeted West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren also joined the nation in paying condolences on the death of the singer.

"Deeply saddened to hear about the demise of Legendary Music Composer & Singer, Shri Bappi Lahiri Ji. He will be fondly remembered for his unique voice and catchy dance numbers. My deepest condolences to his family members and fans all over the world. Om Shanti," Biren tweeted.

DiscoKing will always remain in the fond memories of those whose lives he has brought joy to through his iconic music, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said as he paid condolences to the family of the singer.

"India’s #DiscoKing will always remain in the fond memories of those whose lives he has brought joy to through his iconic music. My deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of Sh. Bappi Lahiri Ji. Deeply saddened by his untimely demise. Rest in peace Bappi Da," Sangma tweeted.
