Romi Meitei’s ‘EIkhoigi Yum’ wins multiple awards at IFFK 2022

'Eikhoigi Yum' competed in the IFFK 2022 international competition that had 14 films from countries, including Germany, Bolivia, Tanzania, Brazil, Iran, Israel, Vietnam, Turkey and Spain.

Manipuri film Eikhoigi Yum directed by Mayanglambam Romi Meitei won multiple awards, including Best International Film, at the 27th International Film Festival of Kerala 2022 (IFFK). The IFFK 2022 was held from December 9 to 16.

"Mayanglambam Romi Meitei’s film entitled Eikhoigi Yum wins the FIPRESCI award for the ‘Best International Film’ and ‘NETPAC Jury Special Mention Award’ at the 27th IFFK," the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) said.

Eikhoigi Yum competed in the international competition that had 14 films from countries, including Germany, Bolivia, Tanzania, Brazil, Iran, Israel, Vietnam, Turkey and Spain.

It mentioned that the 89-minute-long fiction feature film produced by Chingsubam Sheetal and Romi Meitei had earlier won the ‘Best feature film award’ at the 14th Manipur State Film Awards 2022 organised by MSFDS under the Directorate of Art and Culture, government of Manipur.

Set in the Loktak Lake with the fishing community facing eviction notice, the film is a narrative on the impact of globalisation on a small remote village which causes the residents to move away in an attempt to eke out a livelihood, it continued.

The eight days long International Film Festival of Kerala organised by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy under the aegis of the Department of Cultural Affairs, government of Kerala, showcased 180 films, screening at 14 theatres and over 13 thousands film delegates registered for the film festival.

"The IFFK presented the best of world cinema and Malayalam cinema and featured competition for films from Asian, African and Latin American countries,” it stated.

It also stated that during the event, Kerala Registration and Cooperation Minister VN Vasavan conferred the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ to Hungarian filmmaker Bela Tarr.

The chief guest of the closing function, prominent writer M Mukundan said film festivals should be used as a means of building a wall of defence against those who obstruct freedom of expression, the release added.
