National Museum of Indian Cinema reopens to public

The museum in Mumbai will remain open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, the Films Division said.

The National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC), a kaleidoscope of the evolution and growth of Indian cinema, reopened on October 22 with all statutory SOPs in place.

The NMIC, located at the Films Division Complex, GD Marg (Pedder Road), Mumbai, was temporarily closed in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The museum will remain open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, the Films Division said. It said the NMIC will remain closed on Monday and public holidays.

Quick Facts about NMIC

1. The state-of-the-art museum was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January 2019. Since then, NMIC has hosted a large number of cinephiles, tourists, students and dignitaries from across the world.

2. The museum is housed in two buildings –the 19th century heritage structure, Gulshan Mahal and the New Museum Building.

3. The museum is designed to take visitors through an absorbing journey of Indian Cinema over a century in a story telling mode with the help of visuals, graphics, artifacts, interactive exhibits and multimedia expositions.

4. The NMIC showcases the resplendent history of cinema and houses many rare artifacts, including vintage cameras, editing and sound equipments, lights, lenses, projectors etc.

5. The museum has an exclusive gallery dedicated to ‘Gandhi and Cinema’ and a ‘Kid’s Studio’.

Children and students can visit the museum for free, while the entry fee for adults is Rs 20 and Rs 500 for foreign nationals.
