Legislators from different constituencies of Shillong have agreed to extend full support to the Meghalaya government in fighting against the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
This was expressed during a meeting convened by the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday. Shillong agglomeration has seven MLAs.
Speaking to reporters, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said, "All the MLAs have agreed to share the responsibility with the government by requesting each and every individual in and around Shillong to get themselves vaccinated at the earliest possible."
He also informed that the government has also decided to reactivate the Constituency COVID Management Committee which was already notified last year. "Again, we decided to reactivate this committee in the respective constituencies where they will have regular meetings at their level. In case if the need arises they will accordingly inform the government for any necessary help from the government relating to the fighting of COVID-19," Tynsong said. "All these were discussed and I am happy to inform you that local MLAs of Shillong are together with the government in fighting against the COVID-19," he added
The deputy chief minister said many suggestions were given by the MLAs, including measures to be taken at the entry point. "We already told them that from the entry points from today itself any person entering the state of Meghalaya will have to go for RT-PCR test," he said. "The MLAs have also suggested that we need to create more rooms in the entry points for collection of samples of each and every individual who enters the state of Meghalaya to which the state government has agreed to strengthen wherever necessary for the manpower of the entry points," he further informed.
On the steps taken to prevent people from entering the state capital, the deputy chief minister said few decisions have been taken in which non-essential shops will be closed down from April 26 up to May 2. "By doing this, I am sure movement of people to Shillong will be reduced drastically," he said while not ruling out closure of Iewduh and other commercial areas.
Meanwhile, the deputy chief minister also requested the citizens to not get easily carried away with misinformation about the vaccination drive.
