Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh has stressed the importance of examining the different types of school patterns in the state.
Speaking during the meeting of the All Meghalaya Primary School Teacher Association (AMPSTA) in Shillong, Lyngdoh said that there are different types of schools for which the government has given its sanction.
“There are government schools in Meghalaya which include semi government, deficits, deficits pattern, adhoc, lumpsum schools, SSA and RMSA schools and there are schools that are getting funds from the government for Hindi teachers,” said Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh also expressed his inability to understand as to why there has to be differences between schools considering the fact that the objective of teachers is the same i.e. to impart education and knowledge to students.
He added that there are almost 25 to 30 types of schools in the state and it is the need of the hour for the Education department and the state government as a whole to do some things in order to make sure that education remains the top priority of the state.
The Speaker informed that he had a talk with the state’s Education Minister on this issue and that he has also discussed about it with the officers of the department.
“This is very difficult and I feel that it has to be just government or non-government or maybe private or maybe two or three types of school patterns in order to ensure that we really look at education as the most important priority in the state and for this it is the need of the hour to come together and work on it,” he added.
Lyngdoh also informed that the state government is shelling out about Rs.1770 crores by way of the salary of the teachers with an aim to improve the pay and working conditions of teachers throughout the state.
He added that as per a report that there are about 32,000 teachers in the entire state which include teachers of lower primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools.
“Let me share with you not as Speaker of the Assembly but as an elected legislator elected by the people and also as a leader of the political party which is part of the government that we want to improve the pay and working conditions of teachers to attract the bright people of Meghalaya to the profession and to build the capacity of existing ones and for your kind information, we are all silent but we are working on it,” said Lyngdoh.
