The Khasi Students Union (KSU) in East Jaintia Hills has set up its check gate against influx as a mark of protest against the Centre’s delay to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.

The ILP check gate was set up at Sonapur. Activists of the KSU conducted checks on each and every vehicle entering the state.

Leaders of the union said the majority of the people could not state the purpose of the visit to Meghalaya and simply replied that they will come to know once they reach the destination. Most of them were going to Ladrymbai and other parts of the state, the KSU leaders added.

They said the KSU was compelled to set up its own check gate as the Centre seems to be not having the will to implement the ILP in the state.

The Centre has delayed to give its decision on the resolution passed by the 60 MLAs of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly in 2019.

“Therefore, the checking conducted by the KSU is a message to the Centre that it should immediately implement the ILP failing which stern protests will be taken up,” the KSU leader cautioned.
