The Meghalaya High Court has expressed concern about the implementation of government welfare schemes meant for the marginalised section of the society in the state.

Hearing a PIL here on Monday, the division bench comprising Chief Justice, Biswanath Somadder and Justice HS Thangkhiew said it has already highlighted the fact that the method of implementation of the government welfare schemes meant for the marginalised section of the society – which affects their right to life – is a cause of concern for the court.

“While we are sure that the government welfare schemes are in place, the instructions to implement the welfare schemes must also be in place. However, whether or not there is effective implementation of the government welfare schemes is required to be looked into by this Court only in order to ensure that the target group gets the desired benefits emanating from the welfare schemes,” it said.

The bench in its order asked the Advocate General to convey its observations in this regard to the appropriate authority of the state so that on the next date, it will be able to resolve both the issues which revolve around this suo-motu Public Interest Litigation.

The next hearing is scheduled to be held on June 23.
