More than six lakh people have been impacted by the prevailing inclement weather conditions and flash floods in Meghalaya. In addition to affecting individuals, weather-related calamities also adversely affected 940 villages, 4,384 homes, and 12 to 15 hectares of crops across the state.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Mukul Sangma on Friday visited Rongara-Siju village and extended relief to flood-affected residents. Sangma assured continuous support to households ravaged by flood.
Areas in South Garo Hills have been severely affected by floods, especially along the India-Bangladesh border. There have been multiple landslides and areas including Maheskola and Siju remain without any road link. Six bridges, including wooden and suspension bridges, have been washed away with electricity and the phone network badly disrupted.
Meanwhile, in a statement, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) said that Mukul Sangma’s visit marks the party’s unfaltering support towards the flood victims and denotes its pledge to work for the people given rain or shine.
AITC joint secretary Manik Das along with other local leaders also visited Mahendraganj's Ulubari Village in the South West Garo Hills. He distributed food grains and other necessary items among the affected villagers.
Manik Das had a thorough conversation with the affected people and noted the issues they deal with on a daily basis. He assured the people that the party will work tirelessly to get aid to those in need in the furthest reaches of the state and reaffirmed his unwavering support for the people.
