Youth’s Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) on Wednesday stated that it is deeply shocked to hear the death of Arambam Nanao, 37, son of (L) Dhananjoy of Sagolband Kangabam Leikai “which was reported to have been killed while at police custody after being picked up from his residence by Imphal Police station.”
“We condemn the act of police for the illegal arrest of civilians without any warrant,” YFPHRstated in a release issued by its president Kh Phajaton.
YFPHR stated that such an act of misuse of power committed by the police with impunity cannot be accepted by the people. Some of the police officers are exercising their power just to fulfill their individual needs by forgetting the fact that they are here to protect the citizens, it added.
The violation of human rights committed by the law enforcing agency must be investigated and stringent action must be initiated against those police personnel involved in the killing of Nanao, it mentioned.
Other individuals who have instigated the arrest of Nanao may also be punished according to the rule of law, it added.
YFPHR further urged the department of Home to terminate and prosecute those police personnel involved in the killing of Nanao and also urged the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to take up suo motto urgently and monitor the investigation process. The suspension of the sub inspector Th Jitendro Singh will not solve the problem but all the personnel involved in committing such a heinous crime should be terminated, it added.
“Lastly, we urge the Law Enforcing department to stop the misuse of power,” it added.
