World Food Safety Day observed in Manipur

Health Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh assured that the Health Department is taking responsibility for the circulation of nutritional and safe food products to the general public.

The World Food Safety Day, 2024, was observed in Manipur on Wednesday on the theme ‘Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected’ by Food Safety Administration, Health Department, Government of Manipur in collaboration with College of Food Technology, Lamphelpat, CAU, Imphal at the Auditorium of Central Agricultural University (CAU), Iroisemba, Imphal West.

Health Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh said that such an event is important during these days since it will propagate the matter of health awareness to the general public. There have been issues regarding the compromise of hygiene while reducing the expenses of food items, he mentioned.

He asserted that food safety is critical in everyday life and around 200 diseases arise from consuming unsafe and contaminated foods. He assured that the Health Department is taking responsibility for the circulation of nutritional and safe food products to the general public. He cautioned that mass cooking and mass gathering while consuming foods is unsafe and may lead to the outbreak of many diseases. He stressed the need to raise food safety awareness among the public with slogans and ensure that the slogans are being followed by the public.

He further stated that flood damaged grocery-store items were inspected and a drive was conducted by the Department of Food Safety with an objective to prevent selling of unsafe and damaged food items to the general public. He also stated that it is a noble cause to spread awareness and educate the people. “It is our right as a citizen to eat the right and nutritious food”, the Minister said. From farm to consumers, the chain has to be monitored and the products need to be examined whether it contains harmful chemicals for people’s consumption, he added.

The event was attended by O Sanahanbi Devi, Director of Health Services, Manipur and Prof Ng Iboyaima Singh, Dean, College of food technology, Lamphelpat, CAU, Imphal as President and Guest of Honor, respectively. Officials of Health and Food Safety Department, faculties, staff and students of CAU were also present at the occasion.
