Women from Singjamei took to the streets on Saturday evening in protest against the arrest of social activist Malem Thongam.
The rally, which included the participation of Malem Thongam’s mother, aimed to reach the chief minister’s bungalow in Babupara but was stopped by police forces at Yaiskul area.
The demonstrators demanded the unconditional release of Malem Thongam, who had been arrested earlier in the day.
Malem Thongam had announced her intention to commit suicide in protest after the government ignored key demands. These included the restoration of peace in the state and the withdrawal of 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs.
The presence of Thongam’s mother in the rally added an emotional dimension to the protest, as the women of Singjamei expressed their solidarity with the activist’s cause.
The protestors vow to continue their fight for peace and justice in the face of government inaction.
