World Meetei Council (WMC) on Thursday expressed disappointment over the Centre’s alleged compromise with the lives of people of Manipur and called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to halt attacks on the indigenous Meetei tribe.

WMC secretary general, CEC, Yambem Arun Meetei, in a release lamented over the 14-month-long violence in the state, despite the presence of 40,000 to 50,000 central forces including the Army, Assam Rifles, and other paramilitary forces.

It mentioned that the Union Home Minister on Tuesday took a high-level security meeting on Manipur, notably without the presence of the Manipur chief minister. According to reports, the Centre has decided to deploy additional troops to Manipur, it added.

The root cause of the unrest is caused by the migrant Chin-Kuki terrorists with their objective to force the Centre into granting them a separate administration, it alleged. The same resulted in targeted violence allegedly aimed at cleansing the Meetei from their dominant areas, it stated.

Expressing concern over the continuing attacks against the Meeteis despite the heavy presence of Assam Rifles and the Army, WMC questioned the Centre’s policies and alleged it of engaging with the terrorists, potentially for broader geopolitical reasons in South East Asia.

It reiterated its appeal to the Prime Minister to take decisive action to halt the attacks and exuded belief that he has the power to stop the violence within 24 hours.
