The World Meetei Council (WMC) has urged the Manipur government to expedite the submission of the two reports to the Centre before the 2026 delimitation process.
WMC chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam on Saturday wrote a letter to Chief Minister N Biren Singh making an urgent request to submit Meetei Ethnic and Socio-economic Reports to the Centre. These reports are necessary to initiate the process of including the Meetei community in the list of Scheduled Tribes, it stated.
The letter mentioned that the Supreme Court of India has recently ruled on the matter of reservations, particularly regarding recruitment in state and All India services. The judgment provides for a sub-quota within the larger quota for different tribes, ensuring there is no unfair competition among Scheduled Tribes, it added.
It further expressed discontentment over the alleged attempts to undermine the council and asserted that such tactics will not diminish its resolve to fight for the rightful future of the Meeteis.
It reminded the approaching 2026 Delimitation of Assembly and Parliamentary seats and expressed concern that the fate of the Meetei community hangs in the balance.
It reiterated its appeal to expedite the submission of the two reports to Centre and said that securing these reports is critical to ensuring a stable and prosperous future for the community.
