WMC discusses ST demand with MP elect Bimol Akoijam

Bimol Akoijam emphasised the immense need for inclusion of Meetei in the ST list and asserted that the same will be of huge importance in safeguarding the integrity of Manipur

A six-membered World Meetei Council (WMC) team on Friday met with the recently elected MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, and held discussions regarding the demand for inclusion of Meetei in the ST list.

The team include WMC chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam; WMC Manipur unit president, Urikkhimbam Kunjo Singh; executive members Elangbam Brojenkumar and Ahongshangbam Dhiren Singh; WMC Women’s Front president Urikhembam Matouleibi and publicity secretary Thingbaijam Sushila, stated a release on Saturday.

During the meeting, Bimol Akoijam emphasised the immense need for inclusion of Meetei in the ST list and asserted that the same will be of huge importance in safeguarding the integrity of Manipur, it stated. It will also strengthen cordial ties among the hill and valley, he said and added that the issue cannot be ignored, it mentioned.

He further assured to make all-out efforts towards the same and also gave his word to table the prevailing violence in the state, which has crossed a year, in the Parliament session, it noted. The WMC team also drew the attention of Bimol towards the ongoing crisis in Jiribam, to which he expressed his wish to personally visit the district once he takes oath as an MP, it stated.

WMC further called upon all the civil society organisations and people of the state to extend their support and cooperation towards the initiatives taken by the Council to protect the State’s integrity, the release added.
